About Catherine Dawson
I consider myself a colorist, and through my work I strive to create a balance of impressionism and realism while capturing the essence of a scene in a way that leaves just enough to the viewer's own imagination.
I like to use bold brush strokes to capture scenes and images on canvas through loose composition, fluid brush stroke, and shifting light. My medium of choice is acrylic paint because it is vivid in color and has quick drying capabilities. It has immediate versatility and allows me to be more spontaneous and work quickly, keeping colors fresh while limiting the details so the viewer focuses on the essence of the piece. I work very quickly and finish most of my paintings in one or two sittings, and try to say as much as possible with minimal brush strokes.
My roots are in Grapevine, Texas. I received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art from Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas, in 2002. My work has been displayed in galleries and venues from Texas to Utah.
